Collie Rescue has become a sad reality due to the increasing number of
collies ending up in shelters throughout our Nation. Many of these Collies
coming into rescue in Alabama are above average in quality. Some of these
dogs are strays but far too many are owner surrendered. These numbers could
be reduced by more careful screening of buyers and follow up after the sale
and by breeders refusing stud service to pet bitches, selling pets on limited
registration and using a contract with a return to breeder clause. Last,
but not least, permanent ID is vital. If dogs were tattooed or microchipped
we could attempt to return them to their breeders.
Collie Rescue is heartbreaking, mind boggling, financially debilitating
and back breaking. It is all worth it when you see a dog that came to
you starved, sick, beaten and neglected, become healthy, happy and trusting.
It is the ultimate reward to see the tears of joy on the face of a carefully
screened family who has just been entrusted with one of these rehabilitated
collies.
